Glo's World

Welcome to the May edition of Glo’s world. It’s been a busy month both on the performance front and on bringing in new acts. We’ve added five new tribute acts including Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross, Kylie, Adele and The Beach Boys.  I don’t have space to feature them all here, but you can find them all on the Acts page of my website.

Debut Single Becomes Global Autism Anthem

I am so proud of one of my most in-demand acts, Rachael Hawnt. Rachael and her singing partner Ashley Cutler perform together as The Beautiful Secret, and their debut album was officially launched in Portsmouth in April.

The single from that album is called “What’s Inside” and was recently chosen as the global anthem for World Autism Awareness Week. Rachael’s niece, Katie-Rae, has Asperger’s Syndrome, a condition on the autism spectrum. The song’s lyrics reflect her descriptions of the way she perceives the world. All proceeds from sales of the single will go to the National Autistic Society.

My husband and I were privileged to attend the sell-out launch concert for the album at The New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth in April and were blown away by the quality of the singing, the lyrics and the music – wow! It’s no wonder the album sold-out on Amazon after the show.

Katie-Rae was also there and said afterwards “I hope that the song would be able to reach out to people and increase awareness of Autism.”

You can find out more about the single and the album from The Beautiful Secret’s Facebook Page.

Never Give Up! Never Ever Give Up!

So said Winston Churchill, and it's true.  As an entertainment agent, I speak to lots of venues about the power of live music to attract and retain new customers. Some get it right away, but others take a little longer to see the benefits. This was the case with a restaurant in Port Solent called The Hot Rock. I’d been talking to them for more than 12 months and had all but given up when I got a call to say that they were ready to give it a go.  They booked my Motown Show for 6th April, and everybody in the restaurant had a fabulous night. The Hot Rock are now planning monthly music nights, and I am looking forward to performing there again in the Summer.

Ding Dong The Bells are Going To Chime!

Planning the perfect wedding is one of the biggest projects most people will ever take on.  There are so many things to think about that it’s all too easy for essential items to get left until the last minute, often with disastrous consequences.

We frequently get phone calls from flustered brides trying to book a favourite wedding band only to discover that they were already booked by someone else months ago! To prevent situations like this, I’ve put together a useful article, packed full of hints and tips, designed to ensure that you get the perfect music for your wedding.

P.S. We are the preferred wedding entertainment supplier for South Downs Manor, a fabulous wedding venue near Petersfield. Come and meet us at their special Wedding Open Day on 7th May!  Click here to find out more.

Memories Are Made Of This

When I lived in the US, I enjoyed singing for the residents of several local retirement homes. Recently I’ve started doing the same here in the UK. This month I performed at the Oak Lodge Nursing Home in Southampton, singing a selection of sing-a-long favourite from the 40s-60s.  Music from our youth always seems to unlock so many happy memories, and I love to see the residents' faces light up when they hear their favourite songs.

During my set, I noticed a gentlemen get up on his feet to dance with one of the lovely staff members and was later told that this gentlemen never participates in any of the activities and tends to stick to himself. They were so amazed and thrilled at his reaction to the music, and it was a reminder to me just how powerful music can be.

Bupsi

This month I am delighted to feature another of my acts who has recently launched her debut single.  Bupsi’s career took off after appearing on the X Factor 2015 and since then she has been in high demand by venues and events around the UK. Originally a Tina Turner tribute performer, Bupsi has recently reinvented herself into a fierce, super sexy, solo singer with a unique style.  She looks and sounds amazing!  Don’t take my word for it, check out Bupsi’s new single “Turn it Up”.

P.S. It’s also available on iTunes

If you’d like to book Bupsi for your event, get in touch today to avoid disappointment! She continues to perform all your favourite covers and of course, her new hit single!

Glo's World

Spring is here, and things are starting to heat up!

While the weather outside my office remains distinctly grey, damp and chilly; that is certainly not the case business wise.  March was a bumper month for myself and my acts and our themed evenings have proved particularly popular.

The Magic of Motown

Many music genres seem to come and go, but Motown Classics are an enduring favourite for most age groups.  Our Motown-themed Charity Fundraiser at Tiger Tiger in Portsmouth, was great fun and raised over £1,300 for Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation.

I also performed my Motown Show at the Langstone Hotel on Hayling Island alongside our terrific party band, Move On Up.  This event sold out so quickly that the hotel has booked us to run a repeat performance on 5th May 2017.

Las Vegas Nights

We also organised one of our popular Vegas Night for the Langstone Hotel toward the end of the month. This show captures the atmosphere and energy of Vegas, complete with glamourous  showgirls and the silky-smooth crooning of a classic Vegas vocalist.  For the Langstone Hotel event there was an appearance from the fabulous Supremely, Diana Ross and Elvis was indeed in the building!

Here are some of the Themed Nights we offer:

Gatsby Glamour - Take a trip back in time to those heady heydays of the 1920’s and 1930’s, when flappers were all the rage and excess was the name of the game.  This high energy, foot tapping show, complete with either a male or female vocalist and optional Charleston lesson, will have your guests up on the dance floor strutting their stuff in no time.

Songs of 007 - No other film franchise has created so many classic hits as the Bond Movie series, and they make a fantastic musical backdrop for a special night out.  A 007 themed evening is the perfect opportunity for the men to dust off their tuxedos and bow ties while their ladies make a splash in high heels and slinky sequins.

At Gloria Miller Entertainment, we can arrange a stunning selection of crowd-pleasing themed evenings to suit any occasion, be it a special birthday party, a corporate event or a public dinner show in a hotel.

Gloria Miller Pays Tribute to Vera Lynn!

Forces' Sweetheart, Vera Lynn, turned 100 on 20th March 2017, and as part of the nationwide celebrations, Gloria performed many of Vera’s iconic, sing-a-long classics at a special solo concert for the residents of Chalfont Court Nursing Home in Rickmansworth.

“I don’t usually sing Dame Vera’s songs, but I love a challenge. So, when I was approached about this event, I jumped at it. It’s been fun learning these fabulous songs, and performing them in front of an audience for whom they meant so much was extra special.   It was wonderful to hear so many of these lovely people singing along, and a few even got up and danced!”

Bootleg Blondie – The Official Blondie Tribute Band

There are lots of Tribute Bands out there, but few are endorsed by the original band members.  Bootleg Blondie are one of those who have been.

They have wowed Blondie fans at festivals and venues across Europe, but their most memorable gig has got to be playing CBGB’s in New York in 2006. When Debbie Harry heard that they were playing at the home of US Punk, she sent them a message to wish them well.

They look and sound so much like the real thing it’s uncanny.  Relive all those dance-along hits from the 1970s and 1980s including Denis, The Tide is High, Sunday Girl, Call Me, and Atomic.  Bootleg Blondie are available either as the full band or as a duo show.

Check out the Bootleg Blondie show Reel now.

So, You're Getting Married

I recently came across a piece of UK-based research that indicates that 85% of marriage proposals happen between Christmas Eve and Valentine's day! This explains why Spring is the peak time for wedding planning. With the Christmas holidays behind them, most Brides-to-be dive headlong into planning their special day. There is so much to think about that it’s understandable that apparently little things, like booking your wedding entertainment, get put off until nearer the day. The problem is that the later you leave it, the harder it is to get the kind of entertainer you really want!

As an entertainment agent, I hate it when I have to tell a bride that the wedding entertainer they want for their special day is already booked! To help you avoid this kind of a disappointment, I recently wrote a short article packed with practical advice wedding entertainment tips for brides and wedding planners.

An Album is Born

I am so excited because I just booked my ticket for the official launch party for the Debut CD by local band The Beautiful Secret. When Rachael Hawnt, one of my most talented solo singers, told me that she had been collaborating with Ash Cutler and that they were ready to launch their first collaborative album, I told her I’d be there! And now that day is finally approaching. I know it hasn’t been easy for them to find the time to realise their dream as they both have extremely busy schedules but, having heard the finished product, I am so glad that they kept the faith.

Why not join me on the 7th April at the New Theatre Royal Portsmouth for a fantastic night of live music including a  performance of the album “What’s Inside.” You’ll be blown away when you hear it! Tickets are on sale now from the NTR Box office.

Breaking news – I have just heard that their debut single “What’s Inside” has been chosen as the anthem for National Autism Awareness Week (27th March to 2nd April). Rachael and Ash will be donating all the proceeds from the sale of this single to the National Autism Society. You can buy a copy from iTunes now by clicking on this link.

And finally...
Cotton Club Show Update

In my January Newsletter, I mentioned that I would be standing in for Marleen Hill for some performances of the hit musical evening Swinging at the Cotton Club.  Swapping my solo singer spot for a cast production like this has proved to be an exciting challenge!  If you’d like to know more, click here to read my recent blog post.

My Top 10 Favorite Singers

On Valentine's Day I came across an article, The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time, and I thought wow, what a daring endeavor to take on! I am always asked who my favorite singers are and my answer is an ever-evolving illusion, really. There's just no way to make that sort of commitment, yet the brave people at Consequence of Sound have boldly compiled this list and what a joy it was to share a deep love for many of their choices, and to strongly disagree with a handful of their choices. Here are my thoughts on a few that made their list:

Karen Carpenter #78 - I would have thought she would rank higher on this list, but worthy of making the cut.

Alicia Keys #76 - Ranked higher than Karen Carpenter, I don't think so. I like Alicia Keys, even though I only bought her very first release, and that was only after seeing her featured on the Oprah show. Even though I think she's quite talented, I'm not a fan. My opinion did recently change a little when I caught her live on Facebook chatting about the release of her sixth album, Here. I found her as a person delightful, which made me want to give her music a second listen.

Joni Mitchell #75, Both Sides Now ... What a tune!

Gladys Knight, dubbed the Empress of Soul and rightfully so, comes in at #66. Here's another one that I think should have ranked a bit higher, but even though Ms. Knight has earned her lofty title of being Empress of Soul, I think she has flown a little bit under the radar, even though her career in music spans more than half a decade.

Curtis Mayfield, #57 - Yes, I think he is well ranked on this list. Since presenting my radio show, Glo's Music for the Soul, Mayfield has been a regular feature on my playlists and I'm in an original Soul band called Mayfield, named after this Chicago Soul man.

I should say a little something about their #56 artist, Dolly Parton. Admittedly, I am not a country music fan, however, there is something about Dolly's voice that seems to transcend the genre in the name of great vocals and awesome song writing. She didn't make my Top 10, but deserves an honorable mention ... LOL!

53 - Prince - Just the mention of his name brings tears to my eyes. Along with the rest of the world, I mourned hard when I learned of Prince's passing and feel that the music industry was just left with a gaping hole that no one will be able to fill. As singing goes, wow is the only appropriate word to describe Prince's unique vocal stylings. Should he be ranked a bit higher on this list, maybe. He is above average but I think that's due to his performance more than his voice. In my mind, he's a performer to watch, not to listen to?

This is where we come to the place in COS's list that I strongly disagree. Bob Dylan, #51, ranked higher than Prince and Gladys Knight? Excuse me, what? Nah, bruh! (This one made me go a little ghetto.)

Interesting, the queen of Disco, Donna Summer ranks at #49. She did have an amazing voice. Yes, this feels right. I think some others who are ranked lower on this list can out sing Ms. Summer, but in terms of relevance and how her music defined an era, spot on.

Elvis, #45. This year marks the 40th Anniversary of Elvis's death and the legend of him still lives on and seems to be gaining momentum. Love Me Tender is my favorite Elvis song. What's yours?

I don't think Mary J. Blige, #44 would have made my list at all, and I don't think she should have ranked this high on COS's list. I know she's an important artist and she's had some huge hits, but vocally, I haven't really been drawn to her.

Adele, #34 - The supposed 'new face of Soul music,' a least according to an article I read around this time last year written by Dr. Syleecia Thompson for rapprehab.com. Undoubtedly, Adele has a phenomenal voice that is quite soulful, but I don't think of her as a Soul singer. I will be expanding on this thought in a future post. Stay tuned …

Beyoncé is ranked at #30, and I believe she should have made COS's top 10. She is certainly on my list! I think Adele would be pleased that Beyoncé ranked higher than her, especially after her comments regarding Beyoncé not winning the Grammy for Album of the Year. According to Time Magazine, 'The British soul singer, who racked up five awards including Album, Record, and Song of the Year on Sunday night, was talking about how she didn't deserve at least one of those accolades. "I felt like it was her time to win," the disarmingly honest belter said backstage. "What the f--- does she have to do to win Album of the Year?"' You can read the full Time Magazine article here.
Tina Turner has ranked #27 on the list and I think this is a good placement for her. As much as I love Ms. Turner and I absolutely love stepping into her persona for my Simply, Tina Turner tribute show, she hasn't made my top 10 list.

Two years ago, I started hosting a radio show, Glo's Music for the Soul, on ExpressFM, a community station based in Portsmouth in the UK. Since doing the show, I have become a massive fan of COS's #24 pick, Otis Redding. This man could have sung the phone book and sounded amazing. I especially love his cover versions of songs like The Rolling Stones' Satisfaction and Ben E. King's Stand By Me. He gave every song he sung his own unique blend of Gospel infused Soul. Needless to say, Redding has made my Top 10.

I also pay homage to the living legend, Diana Ross, #21, in my Supremely, Diana Ross show, but I feel she's ranked a bit high on the list from a vocal stand point, but for importance to the music scene, COS has ranked her well. Did Ms. Ross make my list?

I must say something about COS's #18, Stevie Nicks. She is ranked quite high on this list, perhaps too high. Vocally, she doesn’t have a #18 of 100 best singers voice in my opinion, but she's got something though. That illusive 'it' factor that can't really be defined. Two years ago, I caught Fleetwood Mac at the Isle of Wight Festival and I simply couldn't keep my eyes of Stevie Nicks. Even when she wasn't singing, I found myself looking for her … and waiting for her to take to the mic again. She was magical to watch, and in that setting under the stars on an unusually clear night, she was a joy to listen to as well. Ms. Nicks deserves to be on this list.

Things were going along so well until I got to COS's #10 pick … wait for it … Bjork … really? I can hear my mom saying 'if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all' … so … moving on!

So Whitney Houston comes in at #6 just behind James Brown at #5. I find this a bit surprising. I didn't expect to see James Brown on this list at all. I had to have a little think as to why I didn't expect him on this list. He's obviously a kicka** performer, and I have to admit he's got a pretty amazing voice. Obviously, COS is taking more into consideration than having a good voice … remember their #10 pick? And I think in the case of JB, it's a culmination of showmanship, voice and contribution to the music scene. I think Whitney could have out sung him, though.

And here's where COS and I are in perfect sync. Their #1 choice is my #choice. The king of Pop, Michael Jackson. I mourned so hard when MJ died in June, 2009 and I still mourn him today. For months after his death, all I played in the house, in the car and at the office was Michael Jackson. Vocally, a great singer, but I think he's made both COS's and my list because he was an all-around superb entertainer.

So, out of their 100 choices, I selected my top 10 favourites. So, here we go:

10. Sting (#70)
9. Brian McKnight
8. Stevie Wonder (#16)
7. Prince (#53)
6. Otis Redding (#24)
5. Beyoncé (#30)
4. India Arie
3. Lionel Richie
2. Ella Fitzgerald (#14)
1. Michael Jackson (#1)

Thanks to COS's for giving me inspiration to compile my own list. I really enjoyed delving into their choices for The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.

Who would be on your top 10 list? Add them to the comments!

So, You're Getting Married!

Congratulations on getting engaged and now the planning begins for your big day. So, before you put selecting your wedding music at the bottom of your list, let me share a few insights from an event planning perspective.

There are three things that people will go away from a wedding talking about ... 1) The bride's dress; 2) the food and 3) the music. Yes, you read right ... the music. But what is it, after the dress and food, that brides typically fret about? Flowers, the cake, the venue and then the music becomes an afterthought, a footnote in the planning process.

For the wedding ceremony, choose music that really means something to you as a couple, whether you hire a singer or an instrumentalist. For the bride, that all important song that you walk down the aisle too will be the foundation of that amazing moment when the groom first sees his bride. The music leading up to the brides entrance whether it's secular or religious is equally important because a tone is being set for your entire day. And don't forget to have music planned for signing the registry. This can sometimes take up to 20 minutes so you'll need about five songs ready for this (with a couple in reserve). I have sung at many wedding ceremonies and I have always had to pull on those reserve songs during the registry signing. These songs should also have personal meaning to the couple.

For the wedding breakfast there are a few routes you can go: 1) Playlist on a device; 2) solo performer (singer or instrumentalist); 3) Acoustic Duo or 4) Small band (3-5 pieces, with or without a singer). Having some sort of entertainment to occupy your guests during this time is crucial to keep the mood of your day festive. While the bridal party is occupied with taking photos, your guests are sort of hanging around. I suggest using the same Act for your drinks reception that you used for the ceremony (solo, duo or instrumental act). Another viable option is to have your reception band do the wedding breakfast. If you have a large band scheduled for the evening do, more than 5 pieces, then ask the band if they can perform as a trio or quartet for the breakfast. And, the couple will want to put their stamp on the music here too.

Last year my band, Move On Up, did a Disney themed wedding and the bride and groom handpicked the Disney songs they wanted included in the ceremony, breakfast and reception. Whenever we got to one of those songs, especially during the breakfast, I would catch a little reaction of delight from the bride or groom at hearing something that really meant something to them.

Then there's the big event ... the evening reception. This is where you pull out all the stops when it comes to entertainment, whether you decided to just have a DJ or to have both DJ and band. It's important to get this bit absolutely spot on as far as what type of band you hire. Let's say the groom is a fan of heavy metal? (I just booked a wedding where this was the case.) That's great, and I appreciate all sorts of music, but hiring a heavy metal band for the wedding reception would not be the best idea. This is where the bride and groom have to consider who will be attending the evening do and what type of music would have the most appeal across the age groups who will make up your reception. Working with an entertainment agency or experience wedding band will help you get this right. You want to hire a band with a diverse repertoire of music covering many genres and eras.

I once attended a wedding reception where a Rock n Roll band had been hired for the occasion and the dance floor was pretty much empty throughout the night because the bands song selections didn't have a broad appeal. As soon as a playlist was put on with songs that everybody knew and loved playing, the dance floor was full.

For the wedding that I just booked for the heavy metal lover, we are going to perform a mix of songs covering Motown, Soul, Pop, Blues, Disco and Classic Rock n Roll, for the groom. Basically, we are going to do floor fillers to ensure that each guests has the chance to shake their groove thing, if they so desire. We will send our set lists to the bride and groom for their approval a few weeks before their wedding to ensure they are happy with our choices.

If you're using just a DJ for the reception, make sure he or she is prepared to interact with the guests and not just playing track after track. What's exciting about having a live band is that interaction that naturally happens with a good band … they just know what to do to make sure your guests are engaged. Your DJ needs to have this same type of insight and be prepared to switch gears in their planned playlist if necessary to make sure the dance floor is full.

When you're in the early stages of planning your wedding and setting the budget for this all important day, make sure you set a decent amount aside for your music. Many agencies and bands offer package deals to cover the ceremony through to the evening reception, which could save you some money. A DJ can also be included in a package deal. I suggest working with an agency for your wedding because they can do all the leg work to vet the entertainers and make sure you get exactly what you want. Many agencies also offer other services such as photo booths, LED flooring, table magic (another great option to have during the drinks reception) and toastmasters.

Please contact GME to book a free 30-minute phone consultation to discuss your wedding entertainment and to learn about the packages we offer. We would love to be a part of your special day. Just tell us what you want and let us handle the details!

Tina Turner ... Simply, A Survivor!

What word springs to mind when the name Tina Turner is uttered? For me, it's survivor! That's not the only word though, because hero closely follows and superstar is never far behind. Every week day I publish a music news digest so I am always on the lookout for interesting articles on the music business and this week I came across 'The Story of a Soul Survivor, Private Dance at 25.' Now, this article was first published in November, 2009 yet it's still an incredible read.

In 1976 armed with 36 cents and a Mobil gas card, Tina finally escaped her abusive marriage to Ike, but she was mired in debt to concert promoters due to a number of shows having to be cancelled. With the help of Rhonda Graam, a former business partner of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, Tina embarked on a solo career. It's clear by her actions that Tina is a woman of integrity because in those early years of her solo career, she took whatever work that was offered in order to clear her debts and her name that she fought so hard to retain. From the Sonny & Cher Show to Hollywood Squares to Laugh-in, Tina worked and by 1978, her first solo release after her divorce, Rough, was released on the United Artists label. That release didn't sell well and was followed up by another album, Love Explosion released in 1979 which didn't fare that well either.

Fast forward to the 27th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony at the Shrine Auditorium in LA, 26 February 1985 and Diana Ross opening the envelop and proclaiming "What's Love Got to do With It' as album of the year and the world witnesses the Phoenix rising from the ashes in much deserved and hard earned triumph! The crowd erupted in ovation and the next chapter for this amazing woman began.

I was watching the Grammys that night, just a year out of high school, watching Tina accept the music industry's greatest honour not knowing then that the Spirit of Tina Turner would play a huge role in my future. I think I was subconsciously preparing to step into her persona even back then having read her autobiography, I, Tina, co-written by MTV news correspondent and music critic Kurt Loder, and watching the 1993 film, What's Love Got to do With It, more times than I can remember. I've watched countless live performance on the telly and even had the pleasure of seeing her live on 28 June 1997 during her Wildest Dreams Tour on her stop at the New World Music Theatre in Tinley Park. What a night.

I even remember catching Tina at the start of her Wildest Dreams Tour on the Oprah show and envying Oprah who got to dress up like Tina and perform with her when Tina appeared on the Oprah show. She even went on the Road with the tour during the North American leg travelling from Houston to New York City. Talk about your wildest dreams coming true! So like Oprah, I am obviously a huge fan and that's one of the reasons why it's an absolute pleasure to step in Tina's shows for my Simply, Tina Turner Show.

Here's a link to the article that spawned this bit of ranting about the fabulous Tina Turner. I found it interesting to remember her heroic and brave journey from victim to victor. Reading this article encouraged me to push through any obstacles or difficulty I'm facing with determination. Maybe this article will speak to you in some way too. If so, do share your thoughts!

Enjoy.
